iOS EXPLAINED

Does Do Not Disturb While Driving Block Apps?

No. Do Not Disturb While Driving, called Driving Focus since iOS 15, silences notifications, but it does not lock a single app. Instagram, TikTok, and Messages all open normally while it's on. If you want apps actually locked during a drive, you need one more layer. Here's the full picture.

What Driving Focus actually does

All of that manages what comes in. It's genuinely useful: an unlit screen is less tempting. But that's where it ends.

What it doesn't do

Driving Focus never locks anything. With it active, you can still unlock your phone at a red light, open TikTok, and scroll. iOS won't even remark on it. Apple designed Focus modes as notification filters, not enforcement. For the driver whose problem is opening apps rather than receiving pings, Driving Focus solves the wrong half of the loop.

The distinction matters because the reach for the phone is usually triggered by boredom, not by a specific notification: a red light is enough. Our guide to stopping texting and driving covers why that reflex needs a hard stop, not a quieter phone.

The missing layer: a real app lock

On iOS, the only mechanism that can make an app refuse to open is Apple's Screen Time enforcement. DriveBlock packages it for driving: you pick the apps once, then one tap in Control Center locks them for the whole drive. Try to open a blocked app and you get a calm block screen: not a suggestion, a wall. Tap again when you're parked and everything unlocks.

The ideal setup

Run both layers together. Driving Focus silences the incoming buzz; DriveBlock locks the apps so even a bored reach at a red light hits a wall. Notifications handled, temptation handled.

Set it up in 3 minutes

  1. Keep Driving Focus on (Settings → Focus → Driving) for notification silence.
  2. Install DriveBlock free and grant Screen Time permission.
  3. Pick your blocklist and add the Control Center toggle.
  4. Tap before every drive. That's the whole workflow. Full walkthrough in our setup guide.
